Fifth Grade is split into two groups for Art class. Students will have Art once a week--either on Monday or Wednesday. Check this tab every week to see what your student's group is learning.
MISSED THE ART AUCTION? http://stcartauction.weebly.com/5th-grade.html
Week of 5/12
Students received their Sketchbook Challenges (see link on the left). Work continues on our observational drawings.

Week of 5/5
Happy Cinco de Mayo! Students began a new project this week. Using graphite and colored pencils, students started observational drawings of fruit. They are working hard to accurately render their pieces of fruit by using shadows, highlights, and layers of color.
______________________________________________________________
APRIL
Fifth Grade finished the Pacific Northwest animals project. After pushing and repushing their copper tiles, the students wiped their tiles with black paint to create contrast with the lines in the copper. They created black and red frames using the Pacific Northwest shape set. Fifth Grade also worked on their two collaborative projects for the art auction.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 3/3
Work on the copper tiles continued with one group. The Iditarod races on, so don't forget to keep track of where your musher is in Alaska!
______________________________________________________________
Weeks of 2/17 and 2/24
We have been working on our Pacific Northwest animal copper foil designs in junction with our studies of Alaska and the Iditarod. The race starts Saturday, 3/1. Don't forget to track your mushers!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 2/10
We will create a design of our animals for transfer onto copper foil. Our new project uses a technique called repousse. Monday group: see below for sketchbook work.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 2/3
I hope the Monday group enjoyed their day off! The Wednesday group picked their Pacific Northwest/Alaskan animals for the new project. We will be "drawing" these animals with the new shape set we learned.
Sketchbook Entry for Weeks of 2/3 and 2/10
Do some visual research on your new animal. You may tape pictures into your sketchbook or sketch the animal.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/27
Happy Catholic Schools Week! We started a new project this week. Students will learn about the Pacific Northwest Natives in conjunction with their Alaska/Iditarod studies. We reviewed the unique shape set of the Pacific Northwest Natives. Students need to complete both sides of the worksheet.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/20
Happy birthday to Martin Luther King, Jr.! Happy snow days! No class this week.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/13
We explored the theme of circles and learned how to dissolve oil pastels with oil. Look for these circles to take a new shape in May.... (Hint, hint, parents!)
______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/6
Happy New Year, and welcome back! I hope 2014 provides plenty of creative opportunities to stretch your imaginations and challenge yourself! We will wrap up unfinished projects and check sketchbooks this week.
______________________________________________________________
Sketchbook Entry for Weeks of 12/3 and 12/9
Mrs. Magnaye has asked the school to participate in the Catholic Standard's Christmas Card Contest. Each student was given instructions and paper to create his/her card. The card must be turned in on or before 12/9 to receive credit for class. They will be mailed out from school on the morning of the 9th to reach the deadline.
______________________________________________________________
Weeks of 11/11-25
Our schedule has been crazy! Currently, we are finishing our Advent calendar page project with Mrs. Cobleigh. In Library class, we learned about the first Advent calendar, and we talked about symbols and images related to the season. Our calendar will be on display for the school to see in Fr. Dewan Hall.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 11/4
Group B: We met on Monday this week and worked on our van Gogh paintings. Group B received their sketchbook entry.
Both Groups: We will split for Book Fair on Wednesday.
Sketchbook Entry for Week of 11/4 (Group B)
Quickly illustrate your favorite animal. Tell me what makes this
animal interesting. Describe its colors and textures. Don’t forget to fill the
entire bottom portion—your last word should be somewhere on the last two lines of the page.

Week of 10/28
Sketchbook Entry for Week of 10/28 (Group A)
Quickly illustrate your favorite animal. Tell me what makes this
animal interesting. Describe its colors and textures. Don’t forget to fill the
entire bottom portion—your last word should be somewhere on the last two lines of the page.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/21
Groups A & B: We worked on landscapes and portraits in the style of van Gogh. Since we don't have oil paint like van Gogh used, we got creative and were able to simulate texture by dipping chalk pastels into white paint. The chalk blended with the paint to create a thick impasto-like effect.
Sketchbooks were collected this week for the end of the quarter. All sketchbook entries are graded on completion for credit.

Week of 10/14
Groups A & B: Last week, in preparation for our new project, we watched a video that told van Gogh's biography. Students captured important facts by following along with a guided worksheet. We had class together this week, and we read an article from the Washington Post's Express about Vincent van Gogh's repetitions in his artwork, specifically in his landscapes and portraits. We compared and contrasted two paintings of the same landscape and looked at other examples of portraits (from a past front page of the Washington Post's Arts section). Students started sketching either a landscape or portrait that we will paint in the style of van Gogh next week.
NO Sketchbook Entry for Week of 10/14!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/7
Groups A & B: We will not have class together this week, as I am one of several teachers who will be pulled for a meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Since both groups worked together on Monday for Library, both groups will work on the same activity for art with Mr. Johnson.
NO Sketchbook Entry for Week of 10/7!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/30
Groups A & B: We will talk about all the different parts that make up a detailed landscape. During class, we will look at different examples.
Sketchbook Entry for Week of 9/30
Use the words we learned in class this week to create a diagram of the different parts of a landscape. Please label the different parts. You do not have to write anything down in the lined portion of the page this week!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/23
Groups A & B: We finished our monochromatic landscapes this week!
Sketchbook Entry for Week of 9/23
Imagine you are at an amazing outside location! Where are you, and why is it amazing? Illustrate the location.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/16
Groups A & B: We worked on monochromatic landscapes by mixing different tints and shades of one color. Similar to a "paint chip" strip, our landscapes show graduated color (from light to dark). We used simplified forms to create a basic landscape.
There is not a new sketchbook entry for this week! Unfortunately, many students chose not to do last week's entry. I am giving one make-up week since this was our first attempt at making an entry. In general, most weekly prompts should take between 15-20 minutes to answer. The student has the whole week to work on the entry. These entries are not optional, and they are not busy work. They serve to prepare a student for an upcoming class or to reinforce skills or concepts learned in class. Next week, students without complete sketchbook entries will not receive any credit.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/9
Groups A & B: We learned about color theory this week. Ask your student what primary, secondary, tertiary, and complementary colors are! Students received their first sketchbook entry.
Sketchbook Entry: What is your favorite color? Is it a primary, secondary, or tertiary color? How do you mix your favorite color (if it's not a primary)? Why is it your favorite? Use your favorite color to create a drawing or illustrate how to mix the color.
______________________________________________________________
First Two Weeks
Group A: Unfortunately, I did not get to meet with these students due to the combination of half-day and full day scheduling. Next Wednesday, Group A will swap with Group B so we can have our first class.
Group B: We met briefly (due to a shortened period) and went over highlights from the class contract. Students received their sketchbooks.
Next Wednesday, Group B will swap with Group A so they can have their first Library class. When I see Group B next (on W 9/11), students should have completed their sketchbook covers (illustrated with their name and designed with their personality in mind) and have their class contracts to turn in.
