Week of 5/5
No class this week.

April
Students finished their cut paper food projects. Some revisited their portraits for last-minute revisions. We worked on two collaborative class projects for the art auction. I was very impressed with both projects, and students seemed to enjoy using different media: chalk and paint!

Week of 3/3
Alas, another week of no class. Hopefully, we will meet next week. Don't forget to work on your sketchbook entry.

Weeks of 2/17 and 2/24
We finally had class together again! We resumed work on our cut paper food project. As we prepare for our next project, students will do some quick research on a renowned artist.
Sketchbook Entry for the Week of 2/24
Use the web or the library to do a quick search, and record your answers in your sketchbook.
**Optional: include printed pictures or sketches that relate to this artist or his/her work

______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/20
Happy birthday to Martin Luther King, Jr.! Happy snow days! I was lucky enough to meet with one group to continue working on our food project.
Students should have completed their sketchbook brainstorming, so they are ready to put together their compositions.

Week of 1/13
We had a special Monday class this week. We started building up our Cut Paper Food project.
First Sketchbook Entry of 2014!
Plan out your food and place-setting piece. Please provide some sketches and a description of what you want to illustrate.

Sketchbook Entry for Weeks of 12/3 and 12/9
Mrs. Magnaye has asked the school to participate in the Catholic Standard's Christmas Card Contest. Each student was given instructions and paper to create his/her card. The card must be turned in on or before 12/9 to receive credit for class. They will be mailed out from school on the morning of the 9th to reach the deadline.
______________________________________________________________
Weeks of 11/11 - 11/25
Our schedule continues to be crazy. We started a unit on color theory. Students were asked to create their own version of a color wheel, and I got some really creative versions!
______________________________________________________________
Weeks of 10/28 and 11/4
Sadly, we did not get to meet for classes during these two weeks due to the half days.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/21
Groups A & B: Seventh grade's self-portraits are really coming along! This week, we focused on shading and blending with graphite.
Sketchbooks were collected this week for the end of the quarter. All sketchbook entries are graded on completion for credit.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/14
Groups A & B: We continued work on our self-portraits this week and went over some tips and tricks. I am pleased to see that most students have brought in a reference photo to use.
No new sketchbook entry this week! Please continue to practice sketching the features that you find challenging.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/7
Both groups will have a double period of Spanish this week. Please make sure you have your photo for class next week.
There is no new sketchbook entry for this week!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/30
Groups A & B: We started our large self-portraits this week.
Sketchbook Entry for Week of 9/30: Practice drawing eyes, noses, and lips using the techniques we discussed. You do not have to write anything down in the lined portion of the page this week!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/23
Groups A & B: We learned the proportions of the human face and practiced sketching portraits. Once students bring in their photos, we can start their actual self-portraits.
There is no new sketchbook entry for this week! Students MUST finish last week's sketchbook entry, which is due on Oct. 4th. Students who are having trouble getting a photo for class should ask me for help by Wednesday, Oct. 2nd. I would be happy to help a student during recess or after school.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/16
Groups A & B: We talked about value and different techniques to create value in drawings. We reviewed the basic geometric shapes and discussed how value helps to create the illusion of volume on paper. This exercise has hopefully prepared us to start working on self-portraits in the coming weeks!
Sketchbook Entry #1
1. Practice the shading techniques we learned in class by choosing one object to draw quickly from observation. Tell me about your object, how the light hits your object, and which techniques you chose to use in your sketch. (This should take approx. half an hour to complete in full.)
2. Bring in a photo of yourself for class next week. The photo must show your face from the front (not the side). A bigger, more detailed photo of your face will be more helpful to you than a smaller, pixelated one. (Hint: Tape it into your sketchbook so you don't lose it--no glue, please. Please do not forget! If you don't have a photo, you will not be able to participate fully in class, and you will be marked down.)
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/9
Groups A & B: We will meet on Fridays. Students received their sketchbooks and class contracts. Please have both ready for your next class! Sketchbooks should be illustrated with the students' names and their personalities in mind.

First Two Weeks
Unfortunately, I did not get to meet with seventh grade this week since we had a half day on Friday. We also have a half day next Friday: stay tuned for the schedule!
