Eighth Grade is split into two groups for Art class. Students will have Art once a week--either on Wednesday or Friday. Check this tab every week to see what your student's group is learning.
MISSED THE ART AUCTION? http://stcartauction.weebly.com/8th-grade.html
Week of 5/12
Students received the Sketchbook Challenge (see link on the left). Work on their graduation portraits continues.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 5/5
Students reviewed the proportions of portraiture in preparation for their final class project. For some time, 8th grade has traditionally created portraits of each other for their graduation reception. We will begin work on these portraits next week.
______________________________________________________________
April
Students finished their illumination projects and set to work on three collaborative class pieces for the art auction: they created the St. Columba cross using their fingerprints, they collaged images from comic books, and their graffiti style names turned out well!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 3/3
I met with one group this week. The illumination continues!
______________________________________________________________
Weeks of 2/17 and 2/24
Both classes have continued to work on their manuscript project.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 2/10
The Wednesday class continued work on their illuminated manuscripts.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 2/3
I missed the Friday group again due to the second half-day Friday in a row. Friday students, please be ready to jump right into working on your illuminated manuscripts. The Wednesday group is coming up with great themes! Your sketchbooks should have your brainstorming and any visual references you might need!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/27
I worked with the Wednesday group to start setting up their illuminated manuscripts. Students should be brainstorming in their sketchbooks their theme, sentence, letter, and border outside of class!
______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/20
Happy birthday to Martin Luther King, Jr.! Happy snow days! I got to meet with the other group this week. These students should follow the sketchbook entry for 1/13.
**Note: Students who do not wish to compose their manuscript pages about themselves now have the option of illustrating a short Bible verse.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/13
I met with one group this week, and we took a look at illuminated manuscripts.
Sketchbook Entry for 1/13
Students should plan out their manuscript page border, illuminated letter, and sentence.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 1/6
Happy New Year, and welcome back! I hope 2014 provides plenty of creative opportunities to stretch your imaginations and challenge yourself! We will wrap up unfinished projects and check sketchbooks this week.

Sketchbook Entry for Weeks of 12/3 and 12/9
Mrs. Magnaye has asked the school to participate in the Catholic Standard's Christmas Card Contest. Each student was given instructions and paper to create his/her card. The card must be turned in on or before 12/9 to receive credit for class. They will be mailed out from school on the morning of the 9th to reach the deadline.
______________________________________________________________
Weeks of 11/11 - 11/25
We are working diligently to finish up our still-life drawings amid all the crazy days of our schedule. Our next project will focus on optical illusions.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 11/4
We will meet as a full group to create banners for the football game.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/28
We met as a full group to create our tie-dye shirts for the football game. Instructions for rinsing and washing the shirts went home with each eighth grader on Friday, 11/1.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/21
Both Groups: We began sketching our still-life set-ups this week. Several students have already begun to work with the chalk pastels to blend realistic colors for their fruits and sea shells.
Sketchbooks were collected this week for the end of the quarter. All sketchbook entries are graded on completion for credit.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/14
Both Groups: We started work on a still-life project this week. We discussed what students learned from the articles given last week and then worked in teams to set up our own still-life scenes. Students sketched a diagram (so they can recreate this scene next week) and began sketching their final project. We will be using chalk pastels to render the still life.
No new sketchbook entry this week! Please make sure you have turned in your article questions and any missing sketchbook entries.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 10/7
We will not have class together this week, 1) as I am one of several teachers who will be pulled for a meeting on Wednesday afternoon, and 2) as I will be absent from 6th period on Friday.
Both groups will be working together this week with Mrs. Pointer. If you do not finish reading the articles and answering the questions from class, please finish them for next week. These count for a grade and will take the place of your sketchbook entry for the week.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/30
Groups A & B: We will finish up our wire sculptures and start preparing for our next project: still life drawings!
Sketchbook Entry for Week of 9/30
What is a still life? Give me your best guess, or look it up! What is the point of a still life—why would an artist bother to draw or paint a one? Quickly sketch an example of a still life.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/23
Groups A & B: We worked on our wire sculptures this week! Our sculptures are modeled using the human proportions we learned and were sketched out using the principles of gesture drawing.
Sketchbook Entry: Design a monument for a person who inspires you. The monument will consist of one sculpture and one sign. Draw the sculpture and label what types of materials you would use to build it. Write out what the sign would say: it could be a dedication or an explanation.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/16
Groups A & B: We learned about gesture drawing this week. Gesture drawing requires quick sketching--using the whole arm, looking more at the subject than the paper, and fluid, overlapping lines. We practiced sketching different poses with different time limits. This exercise is Part II of our preparations to create wire sculptures.
There is not a new sketchbook entry for this week! Unfortunately, many students chose not to do last week's entry. I am giving one make-up week since this was our first attempt at making an entry. In general, most weekly prompts should take between 15-20 minutes to answer. The student has the whole week to work on the entry. These entries are not optional, and they are not busy work. They serve to prepare a student for an upcoming class or to reinforce skills or concepts learned in class. Next week, students without complete sketchbook entries will not receive any credit.
______________________________________________________________
Week of 9/9
Groups A & B: We learned about the proportions of the human figure this week. Students chose their own scale (head length and head width as the basic unit of measurement) and practiced drawing it in their sketchbooks. This exercise is Part I of our preparations to create wire sculptures during the week of 9/23. Students received their first sketchbook entry.
Sketchbook Entry: The proportions of the human body aremeasured in “head lengths” and “head widths”. Create a new creature that has multiple limbs and appendages. Diagram the proportions of the creature with the proper number of head lengths. Example: all “octo-owls” have a wingspan=10 head widths, 2 tentacles=8 head lengths, 4 tentacles=6 head lengths, 2 tentacles=4 head lengths, body=3 head lengths and 2 head widths.
______________________________________________________________
First Two Weeks
After some mix-ups with our groups and schedules, I think we have finally figured out who needs to be where and when.
Group A: (consists of Algebra I and Basic Algebra B) We will meet on Fridays. Students received their sketchbooks and class contracts. Please have both ready for your next class! Sketchbooks should be illustrated with the students' names and their personalities in mind.
Group B: (consists of Basic Algebra A and 8th Grade Math) We will meet on Wednesdays. Students received their sketchbooks and class contracts. Please have both ready for your next class on W 9/4! Sketchbooks should be illustrated with the students' names and their personalities in mind.
